A BLT is a classic sandwich that I used to eat all the time. So simple but so good. Then you substitute smoked tofu for a vegetarian version and it you’ve got yourself a TLT. Smoked tofu is amazing in anything that requires a little more flavor. I’ve been told you can buy presmoked tofu from the grocery store but it’s also super easy to make your own in a smoker (that’s a story for another time). If you have some grilling to do you can slice a block of tofu up and cover in foil with a drop or two of liquid smoke for good measure and throw on the grill with everything else to get a smokey flavor going. Either way smoked tofu will be your new go-to for everything. I like it topped on pasta dishes, in soup or just cubed over rice with some steamed veggies. A sandwich was the next logical step.
Tempeh is the usual suspect when it comes to a vegan version of a BLT. Personally I have yet to find or make a tempeh strip I enjoy. Usually I just bake the crap out of some thinly sliced tempeh to get some crispiness but it always ends up underwhelming. I think it’s because tempeh lacks fat so I’m just munching on crunchy, smoke flavored sticks. Bleh. Smoked tofu has a better texture thanks to it being tofu. It’s dense and chewy, which might not sound great for a BLT but I promise it is so good. I like my smoke tofu, lettuce and tomato sandwiches on lightly toasted sourdough bread. Nothing else will do. I use a ton of tomato too and it’s a good thing right now because tomato season is just kicking in and already I have so. many. tomatoes. to use up.
For this sandwich I used one whole tomato. The tomatoes I had on hand where on the bigger side of medium for sure but no regrets. I love tomatoes and I’m so glad they everywhere right now! They are so red and pretty. Makes me a little bit sad that fall is on the way because sad looking tomatoes are going to be my reality soon enough. But for now woo! Tomato everything. I have just eaten a tomato sandwich and been totally happy. Smoked tofu does make it so much better though!
So for assembly of the smoked tofu, tomato and lettuce sandwich you will need your bread just lightly kissed by the toaster to get a little texture and color. Then on one slice spread a thin layer of a vegan or regular mayonnaise of your choice or some smushed avocado. I used Veganaise. I almost never eat mayonnaise because I try to avoid processed foods and oil but I can’t imagine a BLT, or a TLT for that matter, without it. Next layer in your smoked tofu. I used a thin slice off cut directly from the block, then it was smoked and then I threw it into the air-fryer for about 10 minutes to reheat it. Sliced tomatoes go on next, followed by a pinch of coarse kosher salt for extra flavor. Then add lettuce of your choice, a squeeze of dijon on the underside of the top slice of bread and put it all together. The perfect lunch.
The perfect vegetarian answer to the BLT. A smoked tofu, tomato and lettuce sandwich aka a TLT.
- 2 slices toasted sourdough bread
- 1 tomato - sliced
- 1/8 block smoked tofu - sliced
- vegan mayonnaise
- dijon mustard
- baby lettuce
Lightly toast bread then layer mayonnaise, tofu, mayonnaise, tomato, lettuce and mustard then top with second slice of bread. Cut in half and serve
